She was one of very few scholarship students in this school and, as a result, was often bullied ( both physically and verbally ) for her status as "lesser." Still, this didn't stop or slow her down. She gritted her teeth and kept going, consistently getting the top grades in her classes, much to the dismay of her bullies.
The bullying eventually slowed down as she grew older and the bullies grew bored with her. She still had a few bullies, but she mostly ignored their jabs. She also didn't fall very easily for their tricks, often distrusting her classmates due to their past with them.
She graduated top of her class and was validictorian. While she had her choice of schools, the scholarships were scarce despite her good grades. Kathryn wound up choosing to go into the military instead because she saw that it would open more career paths for her in the end. Plus, her family had basically stopped talking to her at this point because they felt that she had "grown too big for her britches" because they didn't like that she refused to give up going to this private school years ago.
The military wasn't easy, but she was used to being pushed around and yelled at by this point, so she handled it far better than a lot of recruits. Kathryn was eventually assigned to a unit with Cooper Howard, with whom she eventually developed an almost sibling-like bond with.
She was the one who figured out the defect in the West-Tek power armor suits after watching several of her fellow soldiers be killed in front of her. She warned the others and when she tried to let West-Tek know, she realized in horror that they'd sent the suits out, knowing that they probably had that defect.
Kathryn and Cooper originally got out of the military at the same time, with Cooper going back to California to Barb and Kathryn going back home to Alabama to try and reconnect with her family. The attempt at reconnection failed spectacularly, leaving her heartbroken and feeling adrift.
When Cooper heard about her issues with her family, he suggested that she move to California and start fresh. She took his suggestion to heart and did just that. Barb, knowing how smart Kathryn was and knowing about her accolades, got her an interview with Vault Tec.
The interview left Kathryn feeling very, very weird. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but she felt incredibly unsettled by the entire thing. Instead of being her normally blunt self, she displayed a rare moment of tact and care and gently navigated her way out of the situation and carefully turned down the offer before getting the hell out of there. It wouldn't be until she woke up years later that it would finally click about what unsettled her.
After she turned down the job from Vault Tec, Cooper got her an audition for a role in a movie that he was in and she got the role. When the movie wrapped, she was unhappy with her experience and didn't want to shoot anymore movies, but he convinced her to try again. Once more, she was unhappy and once more, he convinced her to try one more time. This time, she was happy with everything.
It was the experience with a producer afterwards that changed everything and she shifted to a behind the scenes job. She much preferred that over working in front of the camera and told Cooper as much when he tried to get her to go for another movie.
As the years passed and Cooper began to work as Vault Tec's face, she began to distance herself from him and his family. Her interview with them and the deeply unsettled feeling haunted her. She began avoiding him more and more, making up excuses as to why she couldn't spend time with him anymore.
She was in Vegas when the bombs dropped, staying at the Tops Casino and Hotel. Kathryn paid for a very expensive Cryo Suite, which she was ushered into and sealed away.
Kathryn was woken up in 2280. She had no clue who woke her up, but she was in shock at the state of the world. Some folks say that it drove her insane, although she would argue that it's not fully true. She spent a few months in New Vegas and acquired the bottle cap earrings that quickly became her trademark and the source of her new name, Blue Star, before going out to explore the world.
She was briefly in Shady Sands before it exploded and had was just leaving to accompany a group on a delivery mission when the city exploded, getting caught up in the remnants of the explosion. It was absolutely devastating for her.
Blue spent about three years in Vault 4 before growing weary of the routine and parting ways peacefully, having an open invitation to come back at any time.
She currently has resettled somewhere around New Vegas ( verse dependent. more soon. )
