Biography
- Mallory was born on February 14, 2000 in Salem, Massachusetts as a home birth to Lucas and Elizabeth with her grandmother Coraline acting as midwife. The family seemed happy for a while, but somewhere along the line Lucas and Elizabeth got pulled into a cult-like Christian community. Elizabeth stopped practicing her magic because Lucas had convinced her that it was ‘evil’ and swore that Mallory would never know of her abilities.- Coraline promised her daughter that she wouldn’t practice magic around Mallory or tell the little girl of the family history so that she could still continue seeing the child. She kept that promise until Mallory was old enough to be taught how to keep secrets from her parents. She told the little girl stories of their family line and of their ancient connections. To Mallory, it was always a story that was accompanied by a trick. It was their "little secret".
- Mallory has always been drawn to nature and nature has always been drawn to her. As a small child, she was often surrounded by small animals and local strays. She took care of each and every one of them and nursed the sick and injured back to health. Her parents didn’t think of this as an extension of Mallory’s magic, rather a talent for animals and a “Christian love” for helping the less fortunate.
- Mallory was heavily sheltered due to her parents’ beliefs with the only escape that she had from the Christian fundamentalist world being her grandmother’s house. Unfortunately in 2013, Elizabeth visited unexpectedly one day and found Coraline teaching Mallory some basic magic. Angry, she yanked Mallory up by the arm and swore that Coraline would never get the chance to “corrupt” her daughter again.
- It wasn't too long after this incident that Elizabeth found Mallory floating over her bed while asleep. Terrified, she screamed for her husband to call everyone that he knew as she tried to throw herself over her daughter. The screaming woke Mallory up and she realized that she was levitating moments before she came crashing down. Realizing what was going in once she was able to make sense of her mother screaming about "evil corruption" and her needing to be "purged," Mallory realized the horrifying truth.
- Terrified, Mallory began to run. She didn’t stop running until she was a safe distance away. Freezing and alone, she made her way to her grandmother’s house in nothing but a thin nightgown.
- Unbeknownst to Mallory, Coraline was gravely ill with cancer. Still, she took her only grandchild in without hesitation and calmed her down. She then informed Mallory that her floating in her sleep meant that she was destined for something great. She also informed Mallory that they were descended from the true source of magic itself, Hecate. She gave the last bit of her money to her granddaughter and told her to seek out the coven in New Orleans, but not to tell them from whom she descended from. Only to tell them that she came from the original Salem coven.
- Mallory begged to stay with Coraline, but the elder woman told the teen that it wouldn’t be long until she died and that she could only protect Mallory from her parents for so long. So it was with a heavy heart that Mallory packed what few belongings and basics that she was able to get and she made her way to New Orleans.
- Mallory put what her grandmother had told her in the back of her mind and focused on her new life. Unfortunately, it all came flooding back to her when Michael Langdon came into the picture.
- As Cordelia appeared to wane in power and in health and Michael began to rise, Mallory could feel herself start to become more powerful. She began doing things that she’d never done before, such as reviving the dead deer and saving Coco’s life. She had no idea what pulled her into doing it other than some deep compulsion that pushed her to act.
- Mallory was reluctant to be put into such a powerful position, but agreed to do the Seven Wonders. She passed with flying colors and was given the official title of the “new Supreme.” She hated it. Being Supreme was Cordelia’s job, not hers.
- Everything came to a head and Mallory was forced to face her fate when Michael led the attack that killed almost all of her sisters and forced the few that lived to flee. Mallory and Coco were put under the identity spell to keep them safe while the others hid themselves until it was time.
- When Mallory was sent back in time, she chose the point where she left her grandmother’s home for the last time. It was the easiest point to do so since it fell so perfectly between her arrival in New Orleans and before Michael’s dark ascension.
- Shortly after getting rid of Michael, Hecate visited Mallory in a dream and informed her that in each generation of witches a protector is born. They’re only truly “activated” and forced to seek out their coven in times of great and dire need, such as with the whole Michael Langdon “situation.” As such, it was exceedingly rare that this happened and the truth had become lost and muddled over the various generations. Mallory was the first activated protector in a very very long time.
- Mallory wanted to strengthen her bond to her ancestor, so she became a priestess for Hecate. When she graduated, she chose to stay with the academy and became a teacher and Cordelia’s assistant / secretary. She felt that this helped her better fulfill her duties as protector and would help her keep a close eye on the coven in case something else happened.
Canon Divergences
- Madison only had to wait an hour or so before Mallory walked into Hell and freed her. Once she saw that Papa Legba had only grabbed Misty, she realized that she had to step in and grab Madison herself. She's very thankful for all of the work that Madison did during the apocalypse and could see the change that the other witch had gone through. She's one of Madison's biggest cheerleaders and would never leave her to rot in hell.- Mallory never stopped Queenie from going to the Cortez. Once it was reported that Queenie was dead, Mallory went with Cordelia and freed Queenie when Cordelia failed.
- Much like Michael, Mallory can traverse the world of the dead and Hell without issue. This is an ability directly gained from Hecate herself.
- Also like Michael, she can also free spirits and cause them to become living again ( such as what Michael did to Queenie ).
- Mallory also has the ability to free spirits from places like Murder House and the Cortez and allow them to rest again without needing to have access to their bones.
Important Notes
- I can’t take credit for the Hecate descendant route that I took in my crafting of Mallory’s backstory. I was inspired when I found this theory post on reddit. While it was theorized that Mallory was Hecate herself, I’ve chosen to go the descendant route and build Mallory’s story around that. While the theory was the root of the idea, and is heavily backed by canon if one chooses to look, the descendant idea and the lore surrounding it were completely my fabrication. I also gave Mallory her middle name, her surname, familial connections, a few extra abilities, and just headcanons overall.Other important things to know about Mallory:
- Up until a week before the bed incident, Mallory had a dog from the time that she was eight years old. She was a stray and Mallory compulsively named her Hecate, although called her “Cate” around everyone except her grandmother.
- She kept all of the abilities that she gained during Michael’s rise and even developed a few new ones.
- Mallory has most of her memories from the apocalypse timeline, but a lot of the finer details have faded. These memories can return full on if something major triggers them, however.
- The headpieces that Mallory is seen wearing throughout canon were family heirlooms that had been gifts from Hecate herself and passed through the generations. They arrived, along with most of Coraline’s jewelry and several of her dresses, at the Academy shortly after Coraline’s death. She’d had them sent to Mallory behind Elizabeth’s back.
- Mallory’s magic is far different and more primal than the power of the other witches. She draws her power directly from Hecate herself, the source of all magic.
About Hecate
- HEKATE ( Hecate ) was the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy. She was the only child of the Titanes Perses and Asteria from whom she received her power over heaven, earth, and sea.- Hekate was usually depicted in Greek vase painting as a woman holding twin torches. Sometimes she was dressed in a knee-length maiden's skirt and hunting boots, much like Artemis. In statuary Hekate was often depicted in triple form as a goddess of crossroads.
- Her name means "worker from afar" from the Greek word hekatos. The masculine form of the name, Hekatos, was a common epithet of the god Apollon.
NOTABLE HECATE COLORS: Please note that it's canon that Mallory has worn each of these colors during notable parts of the story!
- Black represents her role as Night Walker, Leader of the Horde of Spirits, and the emotional healing she often brings.
- Red is for the blood of the Mother that flows within each of us. The interface between the unseen world and the material one.
- White is for Hekate as The Star Walker, the universal force of creation and destruction. White symbolizes the Higher Self.
HECATE SYMBOLISM:
- Hecate was often depicted in a knee length maiden's dress wtih hunting boots, similar to Artemis. Mallory is scene wearing a very similar outfit in white ( a notable Hecate color ) when she reverses time and revives the deer.
- Due to being a goddess of night, Hecate is often associated with the moon. Mallory is often seen wearing some sort of moon symbol in her jewelry, especially before the identity spell.
- TELEKINETIC INCISION: The magical ability to telekinetically cut into a person's skin without causing any hemorrhage.
- TELEPORTATION: Mallory was shown using this power to escape before Michael could find her.
- TEMPUS INFINITUUM: An extremely rare ability that was largely considered to be a myth among the Salem descendants, as there was no confirmed case of a witch having this power until Mallory manifested it in 2018. Up until then, no witch was known to have successfully executed Tempus Infinituum, and all tales of those who tried ended in death.
- POWER NEGATION: The ability to cancel out someone else's magic or voodoo curse temporarily.
- SCRYING: The magical ability to see things such as messages, visions, and prophecies on a reflective surface.
- MAGIC SENSING: The magical ability to sense the power of another being.
- RESURGENCE: The magical ability to resurrect oneself and other individuals from death.
- CHLOROKINESIS: The magical ability to control plant life.
- LIFE-FORCE DETECTION: The magical ability to detect a person's life-force (or lack of it). Witches with this power use it to determine whether or not a fellow witch is alive or deceased, without ever needing to find the missing witch's body as confirmation of their fate.
- EVIL DETECTION: The magical ability to sense evil like a perfume.
- ASTRAL PROJECTION: The magical ability of a witch to separate her soul from her own body, thereby allowing her soul to travel to different locations via the Astral Plane, a dimension between life and death where witches can spy on different locations without needing to physically travel to them. Witches and warlocks use this power to see areas which would otherwise pose dangerous to them if they were physically present there.
- TELEKINESIS: The magical ability to move things with only the power of the mind.
- PYROKINESIS: The magical ability to create, control and manipulate fire with the power of the mind.
- VITALUM VITALIS: The magical ability to balance the scales between life and death.
- DESCENSUM: The magical ability to descend into the netherworlds of the afterlife.
- CONCILIUM: The magical ability to bend the will of another individual and force them to do whatever the user desires. This power is commonly known as Mind Control.
- DIVINATION: The magical ability to gain knowledge through indirect means.
- TRANSMUTATION: Also known as salire per spatium amongst warlocks, it's the magical ability to move instantaneously from one place to another without physically occupying the space in between.
